“Three
Lies That Lead to Depression”
UNSTUCK
This week we’ll explore three lies
that lead to depression.
My pastor shared these in our current
sermon series UNSTUCK: Fresh Traction for Common Struggles. In 1 Kings
18-19, three lies sent the Old Testament prophet Elijah into a downward spiral.
The 3 Lies
The prophet Obadiah told Elijah he hid
100 prophets in two caves, 50 in each cave, and supplied them with food and
water (1 Kings 18:4,13). Thus, at least 101 other believers were in the area.
God hasn’t provided what I need.
God
grew a broom tree in the desert so Elijah could rest under some shade. Then God
sent an angel to bring Elijah fresh baked bread and a jar of water (1 Kings 19:4-8).
Everything
is broken and doomed.
Elijah had won a great victory over
the 450 prophets of Baal. Twelve large jars of water drenched his sacrifice before
God sent fire from heaven to consume the meat in addition to the wood, stones,
and water in the trench. In response, all the people fell prostrate and cried, “The
Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!” (1 Kings 18:22-39).
In John 8:32, Jesus said that knowing
the truth will set us free.
We’ll be set free to soar.
God is
always present with us.
Where can we go from His Spirit? Where
can we flee from His presence? (Psalm 139:7).
God has
provided more than we need.
Christ
died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring us to
God (1 Peter 3:18).
In
Christ, our future is whole and hopeful.
After Jesus prepares a place for us,
He will come back and take His followers to be with Him (John 14:1-4).
What other lies or truths can you add
to this list?
David
Thank you for your post, David, and I think those are the very lies that Satan hits us with time and time again.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Katy. You are right, the enemy whispers these lies over and over trying to discourage us. Thanks for your input.
DeleteHow about, "God must not have a plan for me, and if He does He must not be working it very hard, because I'm never quite where I want to be?" That's my favorite.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mike. That's a great example of the enemy's deception. God's timing is not our timing, and His timing is usually much slower than ours, even though His timing is always perfect.
